Tokelau - Health
Tokelau has a public healthcare system. Each of the three atolls of Tokelau has a small 12-bed hospital. Due to the country’s small size and limited resources, the quality of medical care is basic. Any specialized care or medical emergency will require travel to Samoa or in some cases, New Zealand. There is no airstrip so evacuations take place by commercial boat and can be difficult to organize. It can take upwards of 24 hours to sail by commercial boat to Samoa. It is strongly advised to have comprehensive travel/health insurance.
Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:
All visitors are recommended to have vaccination against Covid-19.
Aside from the routine vaccines, CDC recommends to have vaccinations for Hepatitis A & B, Rabies, Typhoid and Measles and all standard vaccinations (tetanus, etc).
Due to an outbreak of measles in Samoa in 2019, travellers intending to visit Tokelau are now required to demonstrate proof of immunisation at the border before entering the territory.
Food and Water Concerns:
Typhoid can be transmitted through untreated drinking water, so drink bottled water, boil all drinking water and practice strict hand hygiene.
Mosquito-borne Diseases:
Malaria, Dengue, Zika, and other mosquito-borne infections are reportedly sporadic or uncertain in Tokelau.
Prescription Drugs:
Tokelau receives their pharmaceuticals from New Zealand. However, there are frequent shortages of medications and specialized medication may not be available due to limited transportation to the island.
