USA: Tropical Storm Henri Affects North-east mid-Atlantic States

Tropical Storm Henri has weakened from a Category 1 Hurricane but is forecast to bring high winds and heavy rain to the north-eastern US states and eastern Canadian maritime provinces this week.

The storm’s outer edges dumped record rainfall on New York City and Rhode Island over the weekend, bringing with it storm surges and sustained high winds.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center reported late Sunday evening August 22 that Henri was likely to weaken but was still expected to produce more heavy rainfall and flooding across southern New England and the mid-north Atlantic states early in the week.

Tropical Storm Henri is the ninth named storm in this year’s Atlantic Hurricane season, which shows no signs of slowing down according to a NOAA news release.

“After a record-setting start, the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season does not show any signs of relenting as it enters the peak months ahead,” said Rick Spinrad, Ph.D, NOAA administrator.

NOAA’s update to the 2021 outlook covers the entire six-month hurricane season which ends on November 30.

Henri follows hot on the heels of Hurricane Grace which last week hit the southern part of Haiti before battering eastern Mexico as a Category 3 storm.

In the Eastern Pacific, Hurricane Linda achieved hurricane status on August 12 and remained a strong storm for several days.  Though nowhere near land, the storm’s winds reached as high as 112 – 113 kts (209kms/130mph).
