Greece: Corinth Canal Re-Opens for Business on May 1, 2024
Greece’s Corinth Canal, which links the Saronic Gulf and the Gulf of Corinth and is a popular short-cut for yachts, will re-open on May 1, 2024. The canal has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation works after landslides in 2021 resulted in the canal being closed to all marine traffic until the summer of 2023, when it opened for a few short months.

Restoration Work Schedule: Corinth Canal S.A (A.E.DI.K)
Landslides cause closure in 2021
Opened in 1893, the Corinth Canal separates mainland Greece from the Peloponnese and is six kms (four miles) long and eight meters (26 ft) deep. Since it opened, the Canal has provided the shortest and safest sea-lane for vessels coming from seaports of the Ionian sea, the Adriatic, Southern Italy and those passing through the Straits or Messina en route to Eastern Mediterranean ports and on to the Black Sea and vice versa.
The Canal was closed in January 2021, after suffering damage from landslides which made maritime passage through the canal impossible. Fortunately the remaining works on the Canal will take place in the off-season and June 1st saw the Canal re-opening to mairtime traffic until the end of September.
The Corinth Canal company said that the final stages of restoration work on the Canal will resume on October 1, 2023 and will continue until February 2024, when the waterway will return to normal 24-hour operation.
