One of the principal ferry ports between Vancouver Island and the mainland.
Position 49° 10'04"N, 123° 55'35"W (southern entrance to Newcastle Channel)
Customs post for Port of Entry clearance is based at the Nanaimo Port Authority marina on 'E' dock (next to the fuel barge).

There are several marinas along the waterfront at Nanaimo. All protected by Newcastle Island. They stretch for over a mile from the ferry terminal at the north end of the Newcastle Channel to Nanaimo Yacht Club at the southern end.
There is an anchorage in Mark Bay at the southern end of Newcastle Island.
