I have just bought insurance for a 2006 passage from Australia to the Med, via the Red Sea. I did first contact Intl. Marine Insurance Services (IMIS) who quoted their “Jackline Policy”. Although they would cover our crew of two for the initial portion of the Indian Ocean crossing, their policy excluded any coverage west of the Maldives (including of course the Red Sea transit).

The policy I purchased was from Blue Water Insurance www.Bluewaterins.com in Jupiter, Florida. The underwriter is a Russian insurance company but hey, the “cold war” is over y’know.

Joining an Australian Yacht Club (usually very cheap) automatically means joining the Australian Yachting Federation. They offer third-party insurance for Australia only for about 250 AUD for one year or part thereof from September to September. Conditions may apply for foreign vessels but I am not aware of them. The insurance includes racing cover, as far as I know.
