St. Martin, Marigot Bay: Dinghy Thefts – May 2012

I guess an important update for St. Martin, in particular, the Dinghy Dock in Marigot Bay:

Thefts are becoming a real issue at this dinghy dock – particularly after sunset.

You need to chain everything: Since everything in our boat was all chained we had the stainless carabiner from our dinghy line stolen on the first night. The next evening the thief even cut the fuel line out!

When getting a new fuel line at Budget Marine the salesperson told me that they had had a few such incidents over the last few weeks, particularly in Marigot. According to the local cruisers net, there have been over 20 dinks stolen this month.

It doesn’t seem such a problem during the day, but later in the evening, everything unchained gets stolen. I highly advise cruisers to skip dinner ashore, or at least remove everything which cannot be chained to something solid, from the inflatable.
