Rare Crested Iguana Sanctuary on the island of Yandua Taba

Published 15 years ago, updated 5 years ago

Yadua Taba, the small island next to Yadua (pronounced Yandua) off the West coast of Vanua Levu, is one of the last refuges for the rare Crested Iguana.

In times past, yachts could anchor in the beautifully protected Cukuvau Harbor anchorage and arrange a visit to the sanctuary through the park ranger, Pita Biuloa (local cell phone – 8207358). However, due to a poaching attempt episode, the Fiji authorities now require visitors to get permission in person from the National Trust office located in Suva.

The local Fiji phone number for the National Trust office is 3301807. The visit is very worthwhile and Pita is a friendly, knowledgable host.

Suva is also a very worthwhile visit; Fiji’s capital city is a vibrant, multi-cultural city with lots of great places to eat, provision, etc.
