We went into the Lagoon under the Mola at the entry to Mahon harbour late at night and dropped anchor. At 0900 the next morning the Port Authority banged on the side of our boat with police-type blue flashing lights, demanding a “tax” to anchor. We left and went to Binibeca and anchored the next 24 hours without hassle. Then went onto Majorca.

Posted 28 July 2012 – Be Aware of Mobile Phone Scam in Mahon

If purchasing a sim card or other products from the Vodafone dealer close to the ferry port at Mahon (Menorca), be sure to check that what you purchase works and that it is a valid Vodafone plan before moving on.

Some cruisers report that products purchased at this outlet either do not work or have stopped doing so shortly after buying them.

In addition, significant sums in fraudulent charges have also appeared on their credit card immediately after its use there. Unfortunately, this type of scam is possible worldwide, and cruisers should be vigilant.

Posted 17 July 2012 – No Facilities and Exorbitant Berthing Fees

We arrived in Mahon July 10th to find “no anchor” buoys and were directed by a police boat – complete with a blue flashing light – to moorings at Marina Mahon that cost 150 Euros per night for a 14.2m monohull (cash only no receipt)! We left and sailed up the coast and dropped anchor. Also, there were no showers or Wifi and water and electricity were extra. We won’t be back.
