Guatemala, Rio Dulce, Mango Marina: Dinghy and Outboard Theft – October 2012

Report Content

We are staying at Mango Marina, Rio Dulce, Guatemala. Between 3 and 6 am on Friday, October 12, 2012, our 11 foot Caribe inflatable dinghy with Yamaha 15 hp 2 cycle motor was stolen.

The dinghy was secured to a steel dock with 3/8″ SS chain and lock and a 3/8″ braided steel security cable with lock. The motor was secured to the dinghy with a Masterlock through the toggles and a 3/8″ braided steel security cable with a lock to the dinghy. We are the only boat on one side of the marina and the area is not well lit. The marina does not have a guard and no dogs.

The perpetrator(s) arrived at the marina by Cayuga and left the Cayuga behind. We have been unable to identify the owner of the Cayuga.

An employee dove the area under the dinghy and salvaged heavy duty bolt cutters, cable cutters, hacksaw, 2 hacks saw blades and a piece of sawed through 3/8″ SS chain.

For 3 days we searched the area. We offered a reward.  The dinghy has not been recovered. At this time, the Guatemalan Navy is not patrolling the river. We have been told that October, November and December are typically high theft times.

Update March 22nd 2013

I would like to add an update to my post.

The marina now has a dog and guard and improved lighting. We are still at Mango Marina. We feel very safe and secure. We highly recommend this marina.

Thanks,

Gail
