Super Typhoon Nanmadol, the 14th typhoon of the year, is expected to approach southwest Japan, including Okinawa Prefecture, the Amami islands in Kagoshima Prefecture and the southern Kyushu region this weekend.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the typhoon was moving west at a speed of about 15 kilometers per hour over the sea south of Japan on September 16 with winds gusting up to 180km/h.

The JMA said Typhoon Nanmadol was expected to move west as it developed and head toward the southwest Japan islands and the southern Kyushu region on September 17 while maintaining its strength.

After approaching Kyushu on September 18 the storm is predicted to gradually change direction and move east around September 20, threatening wide areas of Japan from the west to the north.

The Philippines state weather bureau PAGASA said the typhoon was expected to briefly enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility late on Friday afternoon and would be called “Josie” once it was inside the country’s jurisdiction.

PAGASA said that Typhoon Nanmadol may reach super typhoon category within 24 hours but it would not have any direct impact on the country because it was forecast to remain far from the country’s landmass. The typhoon, however, was affecting the southwest monsoon that would bring rains over the western sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas in the next 24 hours.

Tropical Storm Fiona Lurks in the Atlantic

Meanwhile in the Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said conditions from Tropical Storm Fiona are beginning to spread across the Leeward Islands and will then spread westward across the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico over the weekend.

TS Fiona is expected to strengthen gradually over the northeastern Caribbean Sea and it could be near hurricane strength as it approaches the southern or eastern coast of the Dominican Republic on Sunday afternoon before moving across Hispaniola the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeastern Bahamas.

After a quiet August, activity in the Atlantic basin is increasing. (c) National Hurricane Center

Tropical Storm Lester affecting Mexico’s Pacific Coast

The National Hurricane Center has also issued a Tropical Storm warning for the eastern Pacific along the coast of Mexico where Tropical Storm Lester is expected to bring heavy rains, strong surf and wind gusts up to 60kmph.

However, the NHC noted in their advisory that on the forecast track, the center of TS Lester was expected to move near or over the coast of southwestern Mexico Saturday or Saturday night and dissipate over southwestern Mexico on Sunday morning.
