New Noonsite Beta Launch

April 30th 2019 sees the launch of a new Noonsite with a new platform and new design.

Published 5 years ago

For 20 years Noonsite has been providing sailors with up-to-date news and information, covering nearly 200 countries and over 2200 ports.

Today we are proud to announce the launch of our new website on a new platform and with a new design. The new site has various improvements over the old site from faster page load times to mobile compatibility.

As this is a beta launch, please bear with us as we smooth out the rough edges! You can expect to see continuous improvements over the coming weeks and new features over the coming months.

As you can imagine, migrating nearly 20 years of content was a massive undertaking. We have moved 90% of our content to the new platform and the rest will be making the move over the coming weeks.

If you are a member of Noonsite your account has been migrated to the new platform. Your password however has not and you will need to reset your password using the “Forgot Password” feature found on the login screen.

Please note that you should use your email address as your login name.

Please note that depending on your email provider the password reset email may bypass your inbox. For example Gmail is known to filter these messages into the ‘Promotions” folder. Please also check your spam folder if you don’t see the reset email.

If you are not a member, why not join us today? Membership is free and comes with lots of perks. Join one of the longest running online sailing communities as we set sail for the next 20 years!

Sorry to hear you are having problems navigating the new look Noonsite, this latest version was launched in March 2023.

Indeed – use the hamburger menu (the 3 lines top left) to navigate around. You can explore all the options, but getting to countries simply use the country search box, or put your port/country into search and it will get you there.

Once on country and port pages, navigate using the blue bar with icons. They are self-explanatory – an “i” for general information, a list for formalities – an anchor for ports, a speech bubble for comments posted by users, etc. etc.

Give it a try and see how you get on. I am sure you will be able to work it out quite quickly.

The big difference is that every section is now a new page – so instead of scrolling, scrolling, scrolling down a big page of info. , you now go back to the icon to click on the next section, or use the next section link at the bottom of the section you are reading. This makes page load times much quicker (important especially for our users in poor signal areas) and means you don’t have to scroll continually to find the info. you need!

Do let me know if you continue to have problems.

Your folks are doing a great job, but! After three months since the ‘new beta site launch’, thousands of feedback. When can we expect that the shortcomings of the new design to be fixed or improved? The main issue is the complete lack of a menu system.

Yes, the new layout might look better, the old GUI was outdated. But without a menu system? The old layout and menu were many times better. I strongly advise you to implement a better menu. If not – all the hard work you have done will be waisted. If not done shortly, I predict the website and community will soon be a thing of the past.

Pet information and fees please!!! I’ve always used this site to find the specific
details about checking into and out of countries and now I can’t find links to those specific details. I understand that there is some information for each “main port”, but there used to be more and I sail with a dog so the pet information helped a ton! I also don’t see links to paperwork that we might be able to download, print, and have filled out prior to arriving. I don’t see a “formalities” link or a “fees” link amongst several of the other links and information that used to be provided and easily navigated.

Sorry guy’s but user testing should have been part of your release strategy. The system is virtually impossible to navigate and the login is shoddy. When most of us struggle to get precious WIFI space and time we do not want to use a system that has taken a leap back into the dark ages, this is a seriously retrograde step.

Please, please put a link to the old pages so we can find the information we need and have trusted often without question.

Where are the formalities for clearing in and out of the Philippines? I’ve clicked on the country to find main ports, but unlike the old version there is now no indication of which are the official ports of entry. I click on Cebu only because I already know you can clear there. In the clearance section it says to see the Noonsite/Philippines/Formalities page. Click on that and you end up back at the “Explore Philippines” page. Quite a runaround to get no-where. This is hopeless. By the way the Cebu Yacht Club is on the north-west side of Mactan Island, not the Eastern.

Hi Daniel, we are all so familiar with the Noonsite of old, that it will take a little time to get used to the new version. As we have stated in previous replies – all the information is still there, it’s just a slightly different process to find it – not that complicated once you get used to it (as you have found).

Luckily, I had previously downloaded the “old” version of the information on Radazul and can compare the info directly. On the old version, I can find information like phone numbers quite easily. I cannot find that info on the new site even after I stumbled across the page with “explore Radazul” at the top. The comments were very limited and none had any direct info on Radazul itself.

Thank you very much Noonsite for hosting these infos and making cruising easier!

The beta-layout is a good idea, but seems to have some usability-issues.

    My thoughts for detail-improvement:
    – I would like to have headlines like “Places” or “Services, Goods and Amenities” not shown, if they do not have content to avoid unhappy clicking.
    – “Click here to see Related User Comments” is making it harder to get the infos as quick as possible.
    – A download or print as pdf option which displays the whole content of the page for offline-use (e.g.passages) wouldd be usefull (without having to activate each drop-down-section first)

Maybe testing the site first with some powerusers, who do have good internet-access would be a good idea.

Thank you very much and best regards from Hiva-Oa

Hi Peter, Unfortunately the old layout with 3 columns was impossible to make mobile friendly. While we could have made the changes only for mobile we felt it was better to create a consistent user interface across all devices. You can use the hamburger menu (the 3 lines at top left of the page) to get to the list of countries and hovering over the page title when looking at a country or port page will reveal a navigation dropdown that leads to all the different sections for that country or port. We are listening to the feedback we are getting and are hard at work to improve the new design’s usability.

It has been a big project to migrate and clean up data built-up over 19 years and stored in an antiquated format and with inconstant taxonomy. Noonsite’s initial focus was to ensure that the core data on ports and facilities were correctly migrated. Other general pages will be pulled across during the next few weeks – nothing has been lost.
In addition to being significantly faster to load and with a much more stable server, the new pages are completely mobile friendly, making it much easier to use via a phone or tablet.
Major changes have been made to the back-end data that users don’t see, but will allow better searches and interactions in the future. None of which would have been possible on the old site.
Noonsite take a gradualist approach, keen to get the core data in first before being distracted by adding new features. The site appreciates and welcomes feedback so feel free to contact us directly via the pages, with comments, feedback and suggestions.
