New Caledonia: Tropical Depression Intensifies into Tropical Cyclone Fili
The Fiji MetService has named Tropical Cyclone Fili, which has formed Northwest of New Caledonia and could become a Category Three cyclone in the coming days. It is the 7th named cyclone in the South Pacific basin this season.

Fiji’s Meteorological Service says “Fili” is currently a category one cyclone and moving to the west of New Caledonia at approximately 10 kilometers per hour.
Tropical Cyclone Fili is expected to intensify further into a Category 2 system while tracking close to New Caledonia and could potentially bring destructive storm force winds and heavy rainfall to the country.
New Zealand’s WeatherWatch website reported that the cyclone was in an area where it could intensify into a severe Category 3 storm.
According to WeatherWatch, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island and New Zealand would be the most exposed to Tropical Cyclone Fili’s effects.

Update: April 7, 2022: The Fiji Met Service has upgraded Cyclone Fili to a Category 2 Tropical Cyclone and it is now bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the New Caledonia regions of Belep and Grande Terre.
