Mid-North Pacific: Massive Cargo Loss
The containership ONE-Apus, en-route from China to California, lost a significant amount of containers overboard on 30 November.

The containership ONE Apus was on passage from Yantian, China to Long Beach, California when on the night of Monday 30 November it hit a mid-Pacific storm with gale force winds and large swells approximately 1,600 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii.
It is estimated that the number of lost or damaged containers could be more than 1,900, including 40 that are believed to be dangerous goods. This is approximately 25% of the total cargo.
A notification was sent to the JRCC in Honolulu and Guam with maritime navigational warnings subsequently broadcast.
Such a large amount of container loss is rare. The World Shipping Council calculates that, on average, approximately 1,382 containers are lost overboard from ships per year (over the last 12 years), not counting catastrophic incidents.

MV. One Opus / Container ship sailing from Yantian, China to Long Beach, USA approximately 1,600 nautical miles NW of Hawaii on November 30, encountered a storm cell resulting in 1,816 containers lost overboard – see chart estimating location. Among containers lost were 64 Dangerous Goods containers, including 54 with fireworks, eight containing batteries and two with liquid ethanol. MV. One Opus diverted from planned course and has now docked in Kobe Japan for emergency container discharge, re-handling and repairs.
