Caribbean: Powerful Earthquake Hits between Jamaica and Cuba
On January 28, 2020 a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean between the Cayman Islands, Cuba and Jamaica but there were no immediate reports of casualties or tsunami damage.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake originated at a depth of about 10kms (6.2 miles), between the coasts of Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands.
Despite the large size of the earthquake, the fact that it occurred offshore and away from high population areas lessened its impact on the adjacent islands according to the USGS which estimated only moderate shaking on the islands closest to the epicentre.
However, the earthquake was felt as far away as Florida prompting some offices to be temporarily evacuated, according to CNN.
Tsunami Warning Withdrawn
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially warned the quake could generate waves up to three feet above normal in Cuba, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Honduras, Mexico and Belize, but the warning was later withdrawn.
