The storm was the first tropical cyclone to affect Oman’s northern coast in modern recordkeeping, according to Yale Climate Connections.

India’s Meteorological Department, the top forecaster for cyclones that sweep the Indian Ocean, said gusts from Cyclone Shaheen were recorded up 150km/ (93mph).

The cyclone brought severe flooding and landslides to Oman, dumping nearly three years worth of rainfall in one day to some areas.

Omani state television broadcast images of flooded roadways and valleys as the storm churned deeper into the sultanate, its outer edges reaching the neighbouring United Arab Emirates.

Across the Arabian Gulf in Iran, winds from the cyclone resulted in severed dust storms in the Sistan and Baluchestan provinces.
