Legend has it that the Soggy Dollar/Sandcastle Hotel, which was founded in 1970, got its name from the soggy condition of the dollar bills from sailors who swam ashore to come and have a drink at the bar.
Home of the famous “Painkiller” rum cocktail, the bar and hotel were destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017. The bar re-opened on New Year’s eve that year and the iconic Sandcastle Hotel re-opened in 2023.
