From Kauri Trees to Sunlit Seas

From Kauri Trees to Sunlit Seas: Shoestring shipping in the South Pacific

Don Silk built his first boat, the “Patsy Jean,” using Northland Kauri. He co-owned Silk & Boyd, an inter-island shipping company, which operated three vessels and transported thousands of tonnes of cargo around the South Pacific and international destinations. Silk’s adventures in the Pacific over nearly four decades included buying, selling, rebuilding, and wrecking vessels, as well as dealing with hurricanes, shipwrecks, stowaways, and outwitting officials.
