Cies – Protection from Northerlies

When the northerly winds are blowing (we had about 30 knots when we were there), this is the only “protected” anchorage on Cies. There was still a bit of a swell and gusts coming down the hills, but it’s good holding in about 7m at low tide. The beach all but disappears at high tide, and the ferry tourists end up piled up against the rocks. Taking your dinghy ashore is permitted, but you have to lift it right up onto the higher rocks (there are flat bits to the left of the beach as you go ashore) so it’s safe from the rising tide. From here it’s a good walk up the lighthouse with incredible views, and you can get to the first tapas bar in just a few minutes. Nice for lunch on the island – we paid 20 Euros a head for steak and chips, a soft drink and an ice cream. We spent the night here – it was rolly. Lots of fisherman coming and going during the night, so creating wake, but wonderful stars and peace and quiet. We left early in the morning to get north to Ria de Pontevedra before the wind set in again.
