Clearance

Yachts entering the Solomon Islands should anchor near the Point Cruz Yacht Club and go ashore to contact the relevant officials. Ashore, customs can be found at the commercial wharf (to the left out of the yacht club) and immigration about 1/2 km. past the Mendana Hotel opposite the Post Office. A phone number is posted at the Yacht Club dinghy dock for Quarantine.

Docking

Entrance is marked by two tiny markers, red on east and green on west. The bay outside the yacht club is small and beware there are a lot of big boats coming in and out. A few mooring balls available (some charge and others free). On the west side of the bay the yellow mooring ball furthest out charges $15 per night but be careful when approachng this ball as the reef is not far behind it. There are 3 other mooring balls on the east side of the bay which require stern tie to wall. The northern mooring is the most protected and requires the shortest stern line (it belongs to the medical boat which normally sits on another mooring on the west side). Otherwise anchor and stern tie. It is about 65 feet and shelves up. Check in early as it takes about half a day. (August 2008)

Free anchorage is available at Point Cruz near the Yacht Club. Swinging room is limited by the reefs and the manoeuvring room required for the patrol boats at their wharf. The best anchorage may be had outside the patrol boat wharf, stern-tied to the seawall of the commercial port.

There is significant motor-canoe traffic in this area and security may be an issue at night. It is advisable to hoist one's dinghy out of the water and to lock it to the boat. The engine and fuel tank should be locked to the dinghy as well. Loose items should not be left on deck at any time. Boardings have not been a problem, but petty theft has.

Yacht Clubs

The Point Cruz Yacht Club offers free temporary membership to overseas visitors. The bar and kitchen are open for lunch and dinner. Cold showers and laundry facilities are available.
