 Helsinki - Profile

Location

Helsinki maintains a small-town feel; there are no high-rise buildings and the market square is still surrounded by 19th-century architecture. It is unlike any other Finnish city, due in part to the fascinating combination of Swedish and Russian influences.

Clearance

See Finland Clearance for full details on formalities.

On arrival at the Helsinki traffic control area all vessels over 12 m shall maintain permanent watch on VHF Channel 71. Vessels over 20 m must report to the station the name of the vessel, its route and destination. A similar report must be made before departure.

Clearance is done at Suomenlinna Island, southeast of Helsinki, at a special clearance station for yachts. This is approached from the SW, through a narrow channel at the north end of Susiasaari Island.

Berth at the jetty clearly marked "Passport Control". Your arrival will have been seen: wait to be visited. There is no exit off the jetty to the island except for officials. You must phone first (+358 2 0410 6900) (or VHF ch 74) to notify your arrival time (preferably during office hours): give at least an hour's notice.
