Making Landfall
After a long Atlantic ocean passage, making landfall in Salvador de Bahia was both a welcome relief and a vibrant cultural introduction to Brazil. Salvador lies on the edge of Todos os Santos (Bay of All Saints), Brazil’s largest bay offering excellent protection and countless anchorage options among its 91 islands. Here’s what we learned upon arrival:

About the Authors:
The Ovens Crew are an Australian live-aboard family who began cruising on their sailing catamaran, Excelsior, in 2020. Starting out on the east coast of Australia, they have since travelled extensively throughout Indonesia (for 12 months) and then onward to Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, crossed the Indian Ocean to explore the African Continent and its cruising grounds including Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa. After another long ocean passage across the Atlantic, they arrived at the Brazilian port of Salvador de Bahia from where they plan to head north to explore the Amazon River.
