  Lajes das Flores : Profile

Location

Flores is the western most island of the Azores, so named for its flowers. Miles and miles of hydrangeas, cannas and wild roses line the roads and the steep volcanic peaks are terraced by fields bordered by stone walls lined with yet more hydrangeas. The lakes of the interior are worth a visit, some with waterfalls. The locals here are reported to be very friendly and helpful.

A very small marina opened here in June 2011. This is however NOT a good refuge in any strong conditions involving N-NE winds as the little marina becomes very turbulent. For those seeking shelter in such conditions it is advisable to shelter in the lee off the South of the island or, if possible, make for Horta 120nm to the East.

The entrance to Lages Marina is easy enough in calm daylight conditions (see 2012 photo here courtesty of John Blair SY Chelone) but a different story at night with a heavy swell running.

There is a Red flashing light at the end of the Marina Breakwater.

Clearance

This is not an "official" port of entry, however few yachts visit Santa Cruz (the official POE) as it offers poor shelter, therefore the Maritime Police and National Guard check visiting yachts in as an accommodation.

Port officials visit the harbour several times a day to check on visiting yachts. Clearance is done with Police, Immigration and Customs. Officials are reported to be very nice and helpful.

The Maritime Police can be found next to the library, they may check passports and stamp a copy of the crew list, which then needs to be taken to Immigration (across the street and down a block). This office does not appear to be open very often.

Docking

At the time of writing, the marina is free, as there is no water or electricity.

There is only limited space alongside at the quay, and quayside mooring is only permitted when a ship is not expected.

The Anchorage inside the jetty is sheltered and quite comfortable, however the outer Anchorage is very exposed and uncomfortable in strong North to North-East'ly winds.

There is a floating pontoon for dinghies and mooring buoys planned. For now dinghies tie up to the wharf steps by the boat ramp closest to town. There are cold water showers and toilets in the single story building just up from the steps.

See photo of marina taken by Willem Vankerk during a visit Summer 2011 here.

Contact marina manager Mr. Carlos Avelar. Approx. 20 visitor places on floating pontoons behind the breakwater, but it is a small place. If more than 20 metres, contact the marina for further info. There is electricity, a shower available (poor), and free water approx. 50mts from the marina. Wi-Fi also, however poor quality. Reported to be ample depth but some ocean swell.
