St. Martin: Increase in Thefts from Marigot Bay and Marina Fort Louis – May 2012

The Caribbean Safety & Security Net [Broken Link] and cruisers are reporting a higher than normal occurrence of thefts from yachts and of dinghies in St. Martin.

Chris Lafrance of S/Y Alma Guapa reports that since mid-May 2012 there have been regular thefts in Marigot Baie and at Marina Fort Louis. Items stolen include computers, iPhones, Blackberrys, cameras and a few outboards (15 to even 50HP) and a few dinghies. Thieves have been spotted trying to steal an outboard by unscrewing the bracket during the day, on a sailboat while in the marina!

Chris reports, “On June 12th in Marigot Baie, at 21h00, I saw two young black boys (aged 12-14), short hair, grey t-shirt, in an unmarked dinghy with a +/-8HP outboard, climb on board a catamaran at anchor and try stealing anything they could find. I screamed and tried to catch them without success.

Security agents now patrol during the night at the marina and the police presence has increased at night. However, yachts visiting St. Martin should take every available precaution, including good security mechanisms on the dinghy, and possibly consider not being away from the yacht after dark.
