Reunion to South Africa: Northern Madagascar

Published 11 years ago, updated 5 years ago

We sailed around the top of Madagascar from St. Pierre, Reunion.  We had a great passage and passed the northern tip with one foot on the beach. The winds on the north-west side are mostly land and sea breezes with calm seas.  If we were patient around noon we would only be becalmed for a very short time until the sea breeze picked up.

We had a wonderful time around Nosy Be, Rudy at Crater Bay was a wonderful help and the anchoring and the mooring there were very safe for the boat.  We did not experience any crime but another boat had a 15 hp outboard taken.  The outboard was chained to the boat but was cut off in the night when the cruisers were ashore.

Rudy organized a regatta when we were there, we sailed from Crater Bay to Russian Bay, had a lovely banquet at night. There were organized activities on the beach the next morning before we raced back to Crater Bay.  I would recommend the regatta to any foreign cruiser, we were made most welcome.  Rudy speaks English, as well as French, German and Malagasy.

We really enjoyed our cruise down the coast to Bali Bay, we left from there to Richard’s Bay, SA.

It was such a pleasure watching the local shows and a schooner being handled like the experts the Malagasy sailors are. We felt very safe in this country although we did not walk about at night, the people are marvellous.
