North Coast of Timor

A cruiser reports on sailing the north coast of Timor Leste.

We recently sailed the North Coast of Timor from Jaco Island (absolutely gorgeous) to Dili (Sep 2011, 35-foot sailing) after clearing customs in Gove.

The coastline was spectacular, clean and sparsely populated. The only problem we had was finding good anchorages which were few and far between. Generally going from hundreds of metes to a few meters over coral.

There is a good anchorage in Dili harbor and checking in was a breeze with the friendly officials at the office at the main wharf. Note: they take a long lunch break so go early morning or after 2 pm. We found someone to keep an eye on our boat and did a great overnight trip into the mountains.

We saw one other boat the whole way.

Anyone needing information on anchorages (or lack of) can contact me on [email protected]
