Fuengirola for Engine Repairs

Published 12 years ago, updated 5 years ago

Here is some info. about Fuengirola where we stayed for three weeks due to engine repairs.

The Marina

The pretty small marina is in the northern part of an active fishing harbour, the fishermen tying up along the breakwater and the inner basin. The water is not really clean, the fishing boats make lots of wakes and there is persistent swell coming in. Not too bad but still noticeable.

The marina pricing was just OK at 33 EUR per night (41ft catamaran), water and electricity included. No discount for longer stays. Mooring stern-to non-floating fixed concrete pontoons with mooring lines.

There are several waterside restaurants and bars with good food and good value. The marina has a fuel dock, two chandleries in the marina and another one just outside. A small travel lift and some forklift service at reasonable fees. Helpful & friendly marineros.

Local Services

Several supermarkets nearby, car rental just around the corner. Some beach and the centre of this tourist town is walking distance away, with some nice pubs and tapas bars (we found some tapas bars where freshly made & tasty tapas still cost only 1 EUR).

Engine Repair

One of our Yanmars needed to be taken out for a rebuild and one of the chandleries there (Franc Naval) was listed as an official Yanmar dealer and the reason why we came to Fuengirola. He speaks good English, made every effort to solve our problem and provided good and honest service, even running the engine workshop on Saturdays to get us going again. This also included getting us appropriate mooring space where the marina previously was unable to get us some space.

The Yanmar headquarters in Spain was closed for over a week and unable to send out parts for at least ten days because of “doing their yearly inventory” (what kind of business do they run there??). Franc provided an extensive parts list after disassembly of the engine and did the repairs with parts that we sourced from Germany and Gibraltar.

So if you have Yanmar trouble, this is a good place to have them sorted out.
