Bay of Islands, Opua: Recommendations from Cruisers

Finding a Boatyard that you have confidence in can be difficult when you are cruising in far off lands.  I thought I would pass along our outstanding experience with BlueFix Boatworks in Opua. This information is based upon my direct experience in the last two seasons.

Brad and Charlotte Rowe moved their operations to the Bay of Islands Marina in the summer of 2015, in what had once been the Ashby Boatyard.  During their first year of operation, we had them address a couple of issues that had become evident after our Pacific crossing. Based on our positive experience with their work last year, we had additional work (painting, fabrication, fibreglass repairs, etc.) performed this year.

I have been very impressed by the technical competence of their staff, as well as their commitment to client service.  While they build a high-quality sports fishing boat, they also understand the design and latest construction techniques of sailboats (both catamarans and monohulls).  I have found them to be practical in their approach to developing a cost-effective solution.  I also appreciate their professional approach to developing an estimate for work to be performed and keeping me regularly updated as the work is performed.

While many cruisers head on down to Whangarei after clearing in at the Bay of Islands to take advantage of the close proximity between the docks and town, if you want to have work performed after that Pacific crossing, I highly recommend that you first take the time to talk to BlueFix Boatworks – they have brought a high degree of technical competence and outstanding customer service to the Bay of Islands.
