Looking into possibility of renting an annual berth in the Alicante area.
Previous berths in the U.K. That we have had, involved the marina as the owner of the berths and all transactions were carried out through them.
Is this standard practice in this area.
Simply contact a marina we are interested in and arrange through them?
Also do the figures we have seen quoted equal the total fee or has VAT or other tax to be added.
Any advice would be most helpful.
    Thanks

Stayed at Marina Deportiva De Alicante for 1 night on 20th Oct 2018. Large marina. Charged €76 for 14 x 4m motorboat – we found it the most expensive place we stayed. Almeria was only €21.95 including electricity for 1 night and Gibraltar was even cheaper at £15.75! (Winter rates). Diesel was available, about €1.40 per litre and the local chandlery shop charged me €52.00 for a cheap Rolson multimeter that would have cost about £6 back in the UK!

Security was non-existent (a few guys chatting in a small security hut at the entrance to the pontoon, but no gate- people simply walk through and past while no-one batted an eyelid). Plenty of local shops in the town for supplies and a few good restaurants and bars. We were berthed near the casino and we heard drunken folks going home at about 6 a.m. All in all, I would avoid this marina in future due to the cost. Nice marina though, big wide fixed pontoons, fully serviced with water and electricity. Also, the showers and toilets were cold / out of order.

I have just sent some feedback to the publisher of the Mediterranean Spain cruising guide, and I copy it below.

    Dear Sir/Madam

I made an overnight stay at Marina Greenwich in Spain on 03rd August.

This was the latest stop in a period of around 6 weeks cruising the coast of Portugal and into Mediterranean Spain, and the conditions at Greenwich came as something of a shock.

Firstly the overnight berthing fee (and we were in what is usually a visitors berth) was Euros 80. This is significantly higher than anything we had paid previously.

Secondly, the size, scope and condition of the main toilet and shower block were by a long way the worst we have encountered so far. The review in the almanack gives no clue as to what can be expected, and I suggest this be definitely rectified for the next edition.

The male facilities block is tiny – there are three shower stalls, one urinal and one toilet. There is a small bench perhaps 3′ in length. There is no natural light and the electric light is on a self-timer, and set for not a long enough period to even take a shower. There is no AC or forced ventilation. At the time of our visit, the block was dirty. Essentially it is a small, dark, sauna.

There are two other smaller blocks in the marina, but to a similar standard, and so far away that when one of the crew decided to use it, the Mariners had to take him around in a car.

We made several complaints to the marina staff, but each one said they had made various representations to the management but nothing ever gets done. I have copied the marina manager above (I was given his email address there).

I suggest you try and avoid Greenwich if possible until something gets done. I have had no response as yet from the manager at the marina, which also says something I think

Stayed at Marina Deportiva De Alicante for a few nights in July. For my 10m boat this cost about 45euros per night. The marina is very large and quite busy with commercial traffic and other yachts.

The staff were very helpful and the facilities excellent. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants both within the marina complex itself and it is only a short walk to the town. There several chandlers within the marina and a range of other maintenance and repair services are available. The wifi onboard was temperamental but good within the reception and numerous bars and restaurants nearby.

Stayed at RCRA for two nights in June. €44.37 per night for 12.5 x 4m beam boat (they charge by beam only, length only matters for the tax calculation). Call VHF 9 (Spanish) or just dock at the waiting pontoon (first one as you turn left, opposite the Marina Denia waiting for pontoon on the right). Friendly staff and no problems, although the club restaurant crowd was notably frowning at us until we figured out how to get straight from the reception to the boats without passing through the restaurant.

Showers, toilets, laundry, vending machines and Wifi that actually worked and was fast (likely due to there being only very few visitors/liveaboards). Unusually, the security card was made of paper and worked by showing it to the 24h receptionist who would buzz us in.

The town seems to provide a lot of high-price shopping, but Mercadona not a far walk from the RCRA. Volvo Ocean Race museum (and race headquarters) on the breakwater was of passing interest (free entry) but seems to be more aimed at introducing non-sailors to the subject. The castle (elevator from the beach) is worth a visit for the stunning views.

We are now berthed in Alicante for 10 months over winter and looking for someone to look after the boat, clean the sails, general maintenance etc. So far it seems difficult to find people to work on your boat.

San Juan, just North of Alicante, has a good anchorage and so long as you check the swell and wind direction, you can have a peaceful night there free of charge.

Posted on behalf of Phil Wright of SV Enchantee: Yanmar Dealer Torrevieja: Nautica Martinez. Will travel to Alicante if required. Contact: [email protected]. They replaced upper and lower seals on two SD50 sail drives; lapped the clutch cones; and replaced engine mounts. Some of this was warranty work that we had not been previously advised was necessary.

In replacing the engine mounts they rectified an installation error made by the builder when originally installing the engine 2 years ago. We found them extremely helpful and co-operative. Emails are answered promptly. Good English via the office. Professional with a high standard of cleanliness on the boat while working. I would not hesitate to use them again.
