Description:

Saipan is the largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands located about 120nm north of Guam and 5nm NE of Tinian, from which it is separated by the Saipan Channel.

The western side of the island is lined with sandy beaches and an offshore coral reef which creates a large lagoon. The main port of Tanapag Harbour is on the western side. The eastern side is mainly rugged rocky cliffs and a reef.

A recommended hurricane hole is in Tanapag’s inner harbour, also called Smiley’s lagoon, where shelter is reputed to be good from every direction. It is advisable to check in advance before depending on it for safe harbour.

The Commonwealth’s centre of government is located in the village of Capitol Hill on the island.

Call Harbor Control on your approach on VHF Ch. 16/13.

Visiting yachts will be required to anchor here as the marina does not accept transient yachts.

Position:

15° 13.96’N, 145° 44.11’E (anchorage)
