Whangamata harbour lies on the southeast coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, about 25NM south of Whitianga. It is one of the North Island's most popular holiday destinations with surfing and game-fishing two of the most popular attractions.
The entrance to the harbour/estuary is narrow but well marked and there is a significant tidal flow. Access to the marina is recommended as close as possible to high tide, particularly for vessels with a deep draft. At MWLS (low water) the depth of the channel and the entrance to the harbour is approximately 1.3m, this changes so seek Harbour Master or call Coastguard VHF CH4 for advice on latest depths.
The Whangamata Baris a world-renowned surfing location, so the entrance can be tricky when there is a big swell running. Breaking surf waves may not always be visible and there are often paddlers, surfers and other water craft to watch out for.
An active and vibrant sailing community, excellent cafes, shopping and restaurants. Kayak or paddleboard to Whenuakura Island, also known as Donut Island which sits about 600metres off the coast. It features a collapsed volcanic blowhole that forms a secret inner lagoon with turquoise water.
