Marsamxett Harbour - General Info

Description:

Malta has been blessed by nature with one of the best natural harbors in the Mediterranean and the decline of its traditional role as a Navy base and shipping centre has led to the development of its yachting facilities, which are already among the best in the region.

Marsamxett Harbor, historically also referred to as Marsamuscetto, is a natural harbor on the island of Malta. It is located to the north of the larger Grand Harbor.  It is on the northern side of the peninsula on which sits the city of Valletta, the other side of which is Grand Harbour.

Cruiser Highlights:

The Island has a variety of cruising amenities including a number of repair facilities and shipyards, mainly located on Manoel Island. There is good provisioning in Valetta and a wealth of historical options given that the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

It is an easy and short sail to the island of Comino and the Blue Lagoon, reputed to be the most beautiful bay in Malta.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

It is not advisable to enter Marsamxett harbor at night.

All arriving yachts should call Valleta Port Control on VHF Ch. 12 when 12 miles out, and again when 1 mile out, before entering the harbor. This is a formality and a safety issue as there is a lot of traffic going in and out of the harbors.

Position:

35° 54.28’N, 14° 30.97’E (harbor entrance)

Reported on main Malta page by rkurschner:
Marina di Valletta – this is the newest marina in Valletta, the clubhouse is still under development and washrooms are in a small trailer (but plentiful hot water). Because it is the “last addition” to the marinas in Valletta, there is a concern about the protection in the marina.

We have stayed in the marina in late April/early May 2018 and were very happy. We entered with 25knt NE wind and 2m swell and had no problems. Once past the entrance to the harbour, the waves calm down and there is plenty of space to take sails down before entering the marina. While on the dock, we also experienced 35knt W winds with no problem.

The marina has a great location, it is a short uphill walk to the old town or one can take a bus that stops very close to the marina. Prices are in line with other Valletta marinas, perhaps a touch lower but still quite expensive.

The new marina indicated on the photo above is now open, when finished this will a 5-star marina, summer rates will be accordingly. It is ideally located for visiting the old part of Valletta, a mere 15-minute walk. Buses to all parts of the city and the island, including Gozo ferry, are about 100 meters from the marina. The airport a 15 euro taxi ride.

Our boat spent 2 months here while we went home for part of the time. At no time did we worry about our boat’s well being. The marinaras are some of the most helpful and skilled we have encountered in the Med. The office staff friendly and professional. http://marinadivalletta.com/

The Msida and Ta’ Xbiex Marina has a lot of boats, mostly permanent, but they are friendly and do their best to find a spot for transients. Price for a 13 meter boat was 40.31€ +VAT totalling 47.57€ per in July 2014 plus metered power and water. A city bus is conveniently located on the Ta’ Xbiex side near the embassies and is a deal for unlimited travel for 1.5€.

Stay included use of the Malta Yacht Club, a great place to hang out and drink “Cisk” beer for 1.5€. Transient berth seems to be at the jetty in front of “Black Pearl” restaurant, a large wooden trading schooner, out of the water, that serves as a restaurant.

This is a comfortable marina for a stay in Malta.
