Description:

Dar es Salaam is a major city and commercial port on Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast.  It has grown from a quiet fishing village into a thriving tropical metropolis of over four million people. Straddling some of the most important sea routes in the world, it is East Africa’s second-busiest port and Tanzania’s commercial hub.

Cruiser Highlights:

Dar es Salaam has a lot to offer cruisers and is only a 25-minute drive from an international airport. Entering into the country here is relatively straightforward and it is a worthwhile stopover on your cruising itinerary.

Dar es Salaam Yacht Club is rightly rated as the top yacht club in Southern Africa and is slick and well run with a great social life due to all the Ex-Pats living here. Free WiFi. It is the social hub of Dar’s upper class.

See Des Cason’s Tanzania Cruising Notes for the latest information (July 2023) on some of the nearby islands which are worth visiting.

Anchor either at Slipway (free) and use their daylight dinghy service (10,000 tsh per ride or 100,000tsh for unlimited rides for the month) OR anchor at DES Yacht Club ($60USD/week including 24/7 dinghy service). Yacht club has cheap beer and good pizza plus a nice vibe. It’s well attended and has a lot of friendly people.
They will also help you out with getting hold of immigration and customs. Immigration will come out at 50,000 tsh towards their transport. Or you can get a bhajaji / boda boda / uber into the port (gate 2) and find tra customs and immigration there. Visa on arrival for most countries is $50USD for up to 3 months. For US citizens, I think it’s $100 for multi entry year long visa.

For shopping: Shoppers, Village in the Masaki area for your western needs. Also fruit and veg stalls close to the yacht club.
Transport: Uber / Bolt to get an idea of what you should be paying.
If you get immigration to come to you at the yacht club, no more than 50,000 tsh (about $20USD).
