Description:

Sapodilla Lagoon is located approximately 10 nautical miles from the Belize Barrier Reef in southern Belize and is considered by many to be the safest natural harbor in the region.  Nestled in a tropical setting of lush palms and giant mangroves, the lagoon offers refuge to those cruising the western Caribbean.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

The entrance to the lagoon is located between two spits of mangrove that overlap each other in such a manner that it is completely protected from the prevailing easterly winds and the Caribbean Sea. The Lagoon is approximately two miles long and ½ mile wide.

Position:

16° 46.13’N, 88° 18.17’W (entrance to the lagoon)

(Note:  Google Earth identifies another Lagoon – also called Sapodilla – to the north of this location so we suggest checking location co-ordinates before your journey.)

Update on Sapodilla Lagoon and Marina, Belize. December 2018

Sapodilla is 18 miles north of Placencia and 30 miles south of Belize city. The reef and passes to Glovers reef and lighthouse reef are 12 miles away off shore.

Sapodilla marina construction is complete and the marina is open for business.
Currently services are limited to docking, fuel and laundry. An introductory rate for docking of $25 a night is in force.

The marina is part of a 14,000 acre development that will see 4000 acres of housing plots with 10,000 acres of wild land, mangrove lagoons and pines. So far 30 houses have been built with another 50 under construction. A smart Beach club is open Wednesday to Sunday and is approachable from the lagoon and marina through 1 mile of dredged canals.

Sapodilla Lagoon remains untouched and is a good foul weather anchorage, but probably not a hurricane refuge.
Approach is 270 degrees at 16 46 07 N , noting shallow water extending from the mangroves to starboard, north, until turning into the buoyed and lit channel. ( US IALA B. Red to starboard).

Depths in the channel and marina are maintained at 12ft, 3.5m, and much of the lagoon is also at this depth for anchoring outside the channel.

There is a new marina at Sapodilla lagoon, “the marina at the reserve”. This marina is not on the charts yet but it’s an absolutely great spot to stay. The prices are the same as other marinas in Belize but the service is exceptional (pool, restaurants, bar, all kind of tours, etc…) As we talked with the owner soon they will have customs and immigration there as well. The lagoon is a “kinda” safe hurricane spot.
