Corruption at Safi

Published 12 years ago, updated 5 years ago

Following a visit to Safi on the 3rd March 2012, this is a note to relate our experiences.

  1. There is no charge for berthing a cruising yacht in this port.
  2. Fuel can be brought to the boat – the locals basically insist on an illegal payment in euros and will charge about 50% more than pump prices and demand a present.
  3. The most corrupt official when we visited was the postmaster – he demanded the ship’s papers and retained them until we paid him 25 euros. He has no right to either retain papers or to demand any payment.
  4. The police and customs were honest and efficient, dealing with paperwork courteously and efficiently (well an hour each).

With the experienced level of corruption, I would not leave a vessel unattended here and would remain in this Port for as little time as possible.
