Update on Karpaz Gate Marina in N. Cyprus. 31 July 2011
From Cliff Wayne of SY Blue Cotton

We took advantage of the 1 year free berth and have been in Karpaz Gate Marina for a month now. There are only about 30 Yachts here at present.

What's it like here?

When we first arrived we felt we were pretty isolated, until we found our way around. All of the staff are very helpful and polite, they are truly wonderful people.

  • Nice new Showers & Toilets.
  • The Restaurant is open and offers excellent food at slightly higher prices than surrounding restaurants. A local Restaurant offers free pickup & return from the Marina, good food at reasonable prices.
  • Free fast wifi service with good coverage of the Marina.
  • The berths are Pontoon, Alongside and Stern to.
  • Rental cars are available, delivered to the Marina - Costs are 180 TL/day, 3 days for 180 TL, and 1 month rental at 40 TL/day. Sailor and Cruisers here often share a 3 day rental to hold down the costs while exploring, shopping, etc.
  • The Travel lift should be in operation in September we're told.
  • Fuel docks aren't completed but fuel delivery can be arranged.

Nothing else is open, construction is still ongoing.

Shopping and Provisioning

We're hoping the minimarket will open soon.

Shopping and provisioning can be done fairly easily by taking an air-conditioned bus to Famagusta for 8 Lira. Buses leave Dipkarpaz going to Famagusta, coming by the Marina entrance Mon-Fri about 0615 and 0715, departing Famagusta for the return trip at 1100, 1300 and 1700. The Famagusta bus station is a block away from the Thursday Market and Lemar Supermarket.

Famagusta Bus station is also where a bus can be taken to Girne, Lefkosa, etc. There is a nice small town nearby, Yenierinkoy about 2 miles west. You can get off the bus as it goes through there and catch it on the return trip, there you'll find nice minimarkets, a Monday market, Cooking gas bottle refills available, a small government medical clinic and various shops.

The nearest ATM machine is in Mehmetcik, about 10 miles west, but the bus doesn't go through there. ATM's are plentiful in larger cities and in or near supermarkets.

Checkin and checkout must be done in Girne (Kyrenia). We stayed in Delta Marina in the commercial harbor (about 40 Euro/day for a 40 foot boat), check in/out is handled at the Ferry terminal in that harbor and is free. A good place to provision while you're there.

Karpaz Gate Marina, in my opinion, is an outstanding facility which can only get better over time. It is run by friendly, totally professional staff that prides themselves on the quality of the services that they provide. It is a pleasure to spend time there. Trevor Charlton
