The book follows a hypothetical anti-clockwise circuit around the South Atlantic and covers the east coast of South America from Recife in Brazil to Mar del Plata in Argentina, as well as ports in SW Africa between Cape Town in South Africa to Walvis Bay in Namibia. To complete the circuit are included all relevant island groups: the Falklands, Tristan da Cunha, St Helena, Ascension and Fernando da Noronha. All major ports along this circuit are covered in detail, with harbour plans, photographs and practical information. The book starts off with practical advice on preparation for a voyage in this area. This is followed by details of the surrounding countries, including formalities, provisioning and money matters. The next section provides a detailed description of weather conditions, sailing routes and communications in the South Atlantic. The second half of the book describes in detail the main ports that lie along the proposed route and lists their docking, repair and general facilities. A companion volume “Havens and Anchorages” gives details of bays and anchorages along the east coast of South America.
