The devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan in Grenada is beyond description. From the marine perspective, initial reports indicate that more than 95% of the boats at Spice Island Marine were blown over while approximately 30 of the 170 boats at Grenada Marine were blown over. Relief efforts from the marine community were immediately initiated from Chaguaramas by a combination of the cruising and business community. A salvage operation was expected to commence on September 16 using two workboats and a barge from Trinidad. Insurance surveyors and adjustors were on island within less than a week after the storm strike. YSATT has started a fund to aid the marine community and so far has collected just over US$12,000. This money will used to continue to provide supplies to stranded cruisers and to help where needed with the rebuilding effort at the marinas and boatyards.
