 Newport (Rhode Island) - Profile

Location

Newport is a popular New England summer resort, famous for its Mansions and watching the racing in the Bay from the Yacht Club lawn. It is the home of Salve Regina University and Naval Station Newport.. A major 18th century port city, Newport now contains among the highest number of surviving colonial buildings of any city in the USA.

It is also the major boating destination on the Atlantic coast and practically all marine facilities are to be found here.

This harbour is an important port of refuge. The approaches are well marked and entrance is possible both day and night. Note that fog is common here and the local racing clubs think nothing of racing in zero visibility conditions, so approach with extreme caution if entering the harbour at such a time.

Position 41° 28'N, 71° 22'W (harbour approaches)

Clearance

This is an official Port of Entry.

See the main Noonsite/USA/Formalities page for full details of clearance.

It is necessary to call or fax the CBP office 2 hours prior to arrival to arrange a time for inspection. Nobody must leave the boat until clearance is complete. Inspections are done during normal working hours.

Last updated November 2014.

Docking

There are several marinas on the east side of the harbour and one on Goat Island, plus hundreds of moorings in the harbour, many for transients. Call Oldport Marine on VHF 68, Newport Mooring Service on VHF 09, Brenton Cove on VHF 09 and the Harbormaster on VHF 16.

The main City anchorage is a small area at the southern end of the main harbour, just south of the main east-west channel as you enter the harbour from Fort Adams. Be sure to contact the Harbormaster on VHF Ch:16 for directions.

There are two federal anchorages, one is directly north of Goat Island, and the other is directly west of Goat Island.

All areas are busy in the Summer.

For those at anchor or on a mooring, the new Newport Maritime Centre (see below) is a welcome addition to Newport's facilities for transient cruisers. They provide restrooms and showers, a laundry and internet access.

20nm north of Newport, there are several full service marinas at Greenwich Bay, Apponaug.

Portsmouth and Bristol also provide marinas.

Anchoring

Anchoring is permitted in the harbour, but contact the Harbour Master (VHF ch. 16) first. Boats must not be left unattended (i.e. not leave the area)
