 Miami - Profile

Location

Miami is part of a vast metropolitan area. Without many breaks, the city stretches nearly 100 miles up the coast of Florida. The cities of Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach are part of this cityscape.

Similar to many cities that lie on both the mainland and barrier island, Miami and Miami Beach are two different cities separated by the Intracoastal Waterway and Biscayne Bay. There are many marinas and anchorages in both locations. See docking information below for specifics.

There are few areas in the entire world with as many maritime services as Miami or Fort Lauderdale. If it cannot be done here, it very likely cannot be done at all.

The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) begins its East Coast section approximately at Miami. The ICW is a clearly-defined system of canals and inland rivers that parallel the coast. In other words, you can motor up the entire Atlantic coast of Florida without ever going to sea outside the barrier islands. Nearly every significant marina in Florida will be located within a short distance from the ICW.

Position 25° 45.53'N, 80° 07.33'W (channel entrance to Miami Beach marina)

Clearance

This is a Port of Entry.

See USA Formalities for full details on clearing into and out of the USA.

Miami is a popular landing point for yachts arriving from foreign ports; however, due to the fact that the Miami Seaport is incredibly busy at almost all hours, arriving yachtsmen may want to opt for a more quiet Port of Entry. Be aware that yachts arriving from abroad must make contact with the US Customs and Border Protection office immediately upon landing and may not disembark before receiving instructions from the CBP.

Miami Beach is not typically a Port of Entry; however, some marinas offer clearance assistance as part of a concierge service. Check with the individual marinas prior to arrival.

If arriving directly from Cuba, be aware that you may be refused a Crusing Licence (or have an exisiting one cancelled). US nationals (whether on a foreign or US registered yacht) should ensure that they comply with US Licensing Procedures for their citizens who visit Cuba. See Noonsite Report on visiting Cuba.

Docking

Miami and Miami Beach are separate cities, but both are included in this list. Miami Beach is located on the barrier island east of Miami.

Dockage options in Miami Beach are typically more expensive than Miami, but many cruisers take advantage of the copious anchorage options and forego the marinas altogether. Some marinas charge a fee to land an dinghy at their docks.

To differentiate between Miami and Miami Beach marinas, check the address of the listing.

There are hundreds of marinas, dockage options, and anchorages in the Miami and Miami Beach area. The list below includes some of the more notable marinas or locations with which Noonsite contributors have experience. Please send suggestions of marinas to [email protected].

HURRICANE IRMA: Many of the marinas in this listing may have been damage during Hurricane Irma (September 2017), particularly Dinner Key Marina and the mooring field adjacent. Please email us with updates.

This explains the difficulties that can be encountered when sailing directly to the US from Cuba.

**BEWARE IF COMING STRAIGHT FROM CUBA!!***
We sailed from Havana to Miami, as we'd been advised that customs at Key West can be funny about boats arriving from Cuba. However we were denied a Cruising Permit by the officer in Miami. This means we have to sail to the Bahamas, check in and pay $300 before sailing back to the U.S. (Our boat is British).
