 Formentera - Profile

Location

This small island, with its small satellite island of Espalmador, lies just south of Ibiza. With the introduction of a ferry service, the amount of tourism here has increased in the last few years. However, it is still a quiet, peaceful place with beautiful white beaches.

Position 38° 44'06"N, 01° 25'11"E. (harbour entrance)

Docking

Formentera

Anchoring at Puerto la Savina, west of the harbour, is good for a short trip ashore but exposed for an overnight stay. Anchor in 3-4m, but care is needed as it shallows quickly closer in. Sand patches between the rocky areas are clearly visible through the clear water. For longer stays here it's better to use one of the marinas.

Around this island there are various restrictions regarding the use of the buoys and where to anchor.

The designated buoys are in place between 1 June and 30 September, and you need to book in advance by contacting www.balearslifeposidonia.eu. Reservations can be made 2 to 20 days in advance. There is a restriction of two consecutive nights in a calendar week. No rafting up is allowed. The maximum length of boat allowed is indicated by the colour of the buoy.

In the restricted anchoring areas, the posidonia beds are being protected and it is only permitted to anchor to sandbars.

S'Espalmador

Anchoring is forbidden in the sheltered bay of S'Espalmador. Moorings are provided for a fee and are listed on the CBBA Sea app and web site (http://cbbasea.com/landing/index-en.html). Mooring buoys may not be bookable at all times of the year, especially out of season. CBBA Sea has been contacted and asked for an update regarding booking dates. Cruisers have reported being able to pick up an empty mooring on a first come, first served basis, and paying on arrival, especially outside of high season dates. Use VHF ch 77 for the person in charge of the moorings.

Boats on these moorings must be crewed at all times. Only one boat per mooring is allowed.

We anchored a night at Cala Sabina, which was crowded in June and very busy with traffic. Lots of ferry wash.

Cala Saona not far south of it was much better. Still crowded, but less traffic and no ferries. Same beautifully clear turquoise water.

S'Espalmador buoys are not bookable over the web or CBBASEA app (shows no availability). If there are any free buoys then just take one. They will come and collect the fee. Anchoring is not allowed even when the buoys are all taken (info on their web and app is outdated).

Lovely place!

Posted on behalf of SY Onaway - visited April-June 2015
Costs for Posidina buoys - Espalmador
29.10E / night from 1st June.
Buoys in place during last week in May. We used them with no charge. Bookable, but no need this early in the season. Lovely spot.

Calo de s’Oli
29.10E / night from 1st June.
Buoys in place last week in May. Bookable but no need this early. Closest to Puerto Sabina, Formentera but a little exposed. Better to anchor off beach to north of Port.

Formentera - Puerto Sabina
This is a very busy place indeed with ferry’s coming and going from Ibiza. A great deal of movement in the port. We will find time to visit and explore the island a little more. There are supermarkets and a chandlers here.

Marina Formentera
51E May exc. water & electricity.
Closest to the action and in the busiest part of the port.

Formentera Mar
37E (May) 85E (June) exc. port taxes, water and electricity.
Much better location as more sheltered from the activity in the port.
