Description:

Taro Island is located in Choiseul Bay off the northwest coast of the much larger Choiseul island. This island is the Solomons northern-most island and lies southeast of Bougainville Island, which is part of
Papua New Guinea, and north of Noro on the New Georgia islands.

Taro Island is home to Taro Airport (CHY) with flights to Gozo and other places in the Solomon Islands. It’s also the provincial capital of Choiseul Province.

Before WWII, all of Taro Island was a coconut plantation.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

The safest entrance is from the North passage which is called Emerald passage.

    The small island of Ondolou south of Wagina in Choiseul’s southern reef lagoon area has had a recent crocodile attack (March 2019). The usual croc smart rules apply anywhere in the Solomons but be extra vigilant in this area- the province has much lower human populations therefore higher number of crocodiles are likely.
