Description:
Mayaguez is an easy landfall from the Mona Passage and after clearing, it is an easy passage south to Boqueron and onward. It is the largest commercial port on the west coast. That said there are no longer any CBP officers on site, so the closest clearance facility for non-US yachts is the BQN airport, 40km north of Mayaguez (take an uber or taxi).

“Great news for all our american citizens travelers: as part of the CBP ROAM program as of right now Marina Pescaderia is an official US Port of Entry to the island of Puerto Rico! Now you do not need to go to Mayaguez office, by sea or land, to fulfill your United States entry requirements. You can just arrive at the marina and do everything from our marina office.”

To clear in Mayagüez, anchor in the middle of the bay just south of Boca Morena. The commercial port is not where you can clear customs. There is a small fishing dock, but we couldn’t leave the dinghy there. We landed on the beach in front of the supermarket Selectos. Good provisioning there. We anchored in 4 or 5 meters of water. Just 2 blocks from the supermarket, you find the customs and immigration. Aduana.

Be sure you have a visa or your ESTA has been activated in an airport or commercial port (ferry…) When it is activated that way, you can transit us islands for the next 90 days. We paid $28.24 dollars for a US flag boat, and it’s valid until the end of the year. Only cash and no change is given. For a foreign vessel was a similar amount and I cannot remember how long it was valid for. You have to report by phone before walking in. If you don’t have a visa or an ESTA activated, you will have to pay a $500 dollars fine per person.
There is no longer a ferry to the DR (it now leaves from San Juan). Therefore you no longer ever find Customs at the commercial dock. Call Customs to check in when you arrive, then expect to go to the Customs House downtown to complete check-in, unless you are a USA flagged boat using one of the web-based check-in systems.
