 Norfolk Island - Formalities

Clearance

Australian Border Force (ABF) reporting requirements for Norfolk Island are the same as those for mainland Australia and any non-citizen arriving into Norfolk Island is required to hold a valid Australian Visa.

Pre-Arrival Notification:

1.       All Smallcraft arriving into Australia are required to report their arrival to the ABF at a minimum of 96 hours prior to landfall.

2.       All international Smallcraft arriving into Norfolk Island are required to report when entering within the Port Limits on VHF Channel 16.

3.       The master is responsible for pre-arrival notification being received by the ABF within the appropriate timeframe (minimum 96 hours – maximum 3 months).

Pre-arrival notification can be made by either:

Emailing: [email protected] or [email protected]
Phone: +61 2 6246 1325
Faxing: +61 2 6275 5078

You will need to include:

  • the name of your craft
  • the craft's country and port of registration
  • your intended first port of arrival
  • your estimated arrival time
  • the last four ports you visited
  • the details of people on board including name, date of birth, nationality and passport number
  • details of any illness or disease recently encountered
  • if you have any animals on board
  • if you have any firearms on board

On Arrival

When approaching the island, Customs and Quarantine officials will meet yachts on either Cascade (north side) or Kingston (south side) jetties.

Customs monitor VHF Channel 16 during working hours only.

There are public phones on both Cascade and Kingston jetties.

No one must land until clearance has been granted.

There is a charge for clearance outside of office hours or on a public holiday.

Immigration

Passports must be valid for 1 month beyond intended stay.

Visa requirements are the same as for Australia.

All nationals, with the exception of Australians and New Zealanders (permanent NZ residents do not qualify), need to obtain a tourist visa valid for a period longer than 60 days from the intended date of arrival in Norfolk Island.

This visa must be obtained prior to arrival in Norfolk Island. These can be obtained free of charge from Australian high commissions or embassies. A multiple entry visa should be requested if a yacht is en-route for Australia.

It is a good idea to email ahead, if possible, to let them know you are coming.

Customs

Firearms must be declared on arrival and be kept on board during the yacht's stay.

Landing of fruit, vegetables, flowers and seeds are prohibited. Pork and poultry from New Zealand are also prohibited.

Be sure to radio Customs first before coming ashore.

Fees

Overtime is charged for clearance outside of working hours or on public holidays.

There is a departure tax of Aus$25 if a crew leaves the yacht and departs the island by other means.

Currently there are no fees for customs or anchoring.

Local Customs

The islanders are very friendly and it is the custom to wave to passing pedestrians and cars.

Since Australia abolished the island's Assembly, Norfolk's relationship with Australia is very touchy, and some locals show verbal hostility toward mainland Australians. Refrain from engaging in political discussions unless they initiate the conversation.

Pets

Animals must be declared to Customs on arrival and remain on board
