Word of Caution if you plan to fly out of NZ

Published 11 years ago, updated 5 years ago

Perhaps more seasoned cruisers would have thought of this, but we were nearly not allowed to check in for our return flight back to NZ from Australia because we could not prove that we had onward travel from NZ.

Quantas insisted on some documentary evidence that we had arrived in NZ on a yacht…which we had left on the yacht. Only resolved once Quantas managed to get hold of NZ immigration….we were lucky not to get a jobsworth on the desk…

In order to avoid such annoyances, it would perhaps be a good idea to take your Temporary Importation Exemption certificate with you if you fly out of NZ…

Hi,

In addition to the experience quoted in the 28/1/13 item, we had a similar experience flying from Australia back to NZ. We had planned for it by taking our boat ownership certificate, which would not have been sufficient on its own, but we also had our laptop with our detailed blog showing our route travelled. These were accepted by the check-in staff member, who mentioned that if he didn’t check the airline could be fined several $000s.

Regards

Murray
