 Trapani - Profile

Location

Located in the NW of Trapani Province on the extreme western edge of Sicily, Trapani is well known for its seafood dishes and a very picturesque town. Trapani is the shortest crossing from Sardinia.

Position 38°00.17′N, 12°29.93′E (harbour entrance)

Clearance

It is essential to report both arrival and departure to the coastguard on VHF channel 16. Call the port when a mile from the entrance. Fines may be imposed if you do not do so.

The police and Customs officials are very helpful here.

Last updated August 2016.

Trapani Port Authority
Via Le Regina Elena , Trapani, TP 91100 , Italy
Tel:+39 (0)923 543911 Fax:+39 (0)923 28900
Opening hours: 09:00-12:00 (Mon-Fri), 15:00-16:30 (Tues, Thurs)

Docking

It is prohibited to sail inside the harbour basin, motoring only.

Approach the harbour from the south but beware of the shallows a mile from the harbour.

There are a number of mooring concessions here and some do try to call yachts on approach on Channel 16 to see if they have a reservation. Don't worry, this is nothing official, they are simply trying to get the business ahead of the rest!

The yacht berths are directly north of the entrance and are often crowded. They are exposed to southerly winds and also those from the NW. Whilst the cost for one night is high, prices come down if staying for longer.

See alternative mooring recommendations from cruisers at the bottom of the page.

The port has most services, including crane, travel-hoist and fuel berth.

The town can provide most other needs (chandlery, LPG, laundry, post office, bank, pharmacy and provisions).

Security

Dinghy and outboard thefts were reported here in August 2017 by boats anchored off the lighthouse (see comment at bottom of page). Remember to lock your boat and property at all times.

Upon entering Trapani, we were radioed by "Moorings Trapani" on VHF 16, switching to 09, then asking if we had a berth reservation. This is nothing official, they are just stalking boats with AIS to lure them into their marina.

We anchored in the NW corner of the harbour off the old lighthouse, along with several other boats. The SE corner is also available for anchoring - both areas were marked on our charts as "moorings", but the moorings are no longer there.

The next day we went into Vento di Maestrale, VHF 74. Excellent berthing assistance, they even came out in a boat to guide us in. Price was €70 per night (August, 12.5m boat), non-negotiable. Very friendly and helpful reception staff too. Facilities minimal, there is a single toilet (sans toilet seat) as well as a unisex shower block in the back of the bar. Water (~560 ppm, 7.5 pH) and electricity at every berth. Wifi. Laundry service €15 per load - we hand-washed on deck instead.

Nearby bakery and every morning a very good fish and vegetable market. Small "Spar" store a short walk away and a slightly better "Conad" a longer walk. Larger provisioning will need a taxi (Lidl 6km).

We are staying at Columbus yachting at Trapani. No listing at noonsite but price is fair and show the price on there website. Good place to stay longer.

We stayed in Trapani for two weeks in Aug '17. We anchored in front of the lighthouse until our dinghy outboard got stolen - which was mounted on the boat. Our boat neighbors were robbed as well: their dinghy and outboard were stolen off the davits. We went to boat service Trapani and had some work on our engine done. The staff was very helpful! We hired a mechanic from Miceli. There was a language barrier and although he tried his best he didn't fix our engine problem. A berth for one night costs 60 euros for a 41 foot boat, longer stays are much less expensive. Trapani is a great town to spend a few days!
