Honduras: Three separate pirate attacks on cruising vessels in the past week

(January 26, 2018) – In the past week, there have been 3 separate pirate attacks on cruising vessels in Honduran waters. All cruisers in the NW Caribbean should take measures to avoid these areas prone to pirate activity.

Late in the afternoon of Jan 13th, a US flagged sailing vessel on passage from Puerto Cortez, Honduras to Roatan was boarded by armed men.  Puerto Cortez is on the North coast of Honduras outside the Rio Dulce. They were 5 miles off the coast of Honduras when approached by a “panga” and boarded by the 8 men who were on board, all with weapons drawn. The pirates took control of and robbed the vessel.

On the morning of Jan 19th, a French-flagged catamaran on passage from Providencia to the Rio Dulce was rammed, boarded and robbed by armed pirates 20 miles off the Gordo Bank.

Later that late afternoon, on Jan 19th, another vessel on passage from Panama to the Yucatan was boarded and robbed by pirates near the Gordo Bank.
