Crew of 21 forced to abandon Car Carrier midway between Japan and Hawaii due to fire on New Year’s Eve.

Published 5 years ago

The 650 ft vessel registered in Panama caught fire on Monday 31 December en route from Japan to Hawaii. Fortunately, merchant vessels in the area responded, rallying around and rescuing 16 of the 21 crew.

In a statement, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that four of the five other missing crew members were found, but were unable to be recovered and are presumed dead.

After a three day search involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Navy, and five merchant vessels, the U.S. Coast Guard has now suspended the search for the final missing crew member.

A notice to mariners in the area has been issued requesting vessels in the area keep a lookout for the remaining missing crew member. The vessel has been towed by a salvage tug to Japan.
