We checked into Zea Marina, port of Piraeus, on June 30, 2013.  Piraeus is the main pleasure boat harbour for Athens.

We advise you make an advance reservation via email for Zea Marina at www.medmarinas.com.  We did not have to pre-pay anything as we have had to do at other Greek marinas.  The online booking is very easy and they will send confirmation usually within 24 hours.

When we arrived, we called the marina via VHF channel 9 and talked to the Marinero (the marina helper in a tender), and when we checked in at the office – they all asked if we had a reservation.  The office staff even had a hard copy of our reservation – so we think a reservation is important.

We were berthed on ‘BA’ dock, which is the short term dock.  Our cost was 90 euros a night for our 52-foot sloop  -this did not include water or electricity.  The marina staff was very helpful and kind.  They called repair men and translated for us numerous times.  The marina provides a two-page list of ‘helpful phone numbers’ with numbers for everything from “Emergency Numbers” to “Bus Line Numbers”.

There were no reports of thefts from other boats, which is a good thing as there wasn’t much security around.  The gate on the road into the marina had a guard, but anyone could walk in.  The Wifi was not free.  We purchased an ethernet data modem from Vodaphone which is awesome–we get internet in anchorages and underway.

We highly recommend Mr Gerochristodoulou for engine repair (Cell: 6944-462549) and Mr Anogiannakas for electrical repair (Cell: 6948-119251). We just called the marina office and they called the workers for us as we do not speak much Greek.

We had Diesel fuel delivered to our boat via a small tanker truck and even the laundry guy picked up and delivered our laundry.

We recommend two restaurants at Piraeus Harbor; East Pearl for Chinese/sushi/Thai food, and Parmagianii for pasta–great food at a reasonable price and within walking distance.

By the way, we had a hard time getting a taxi driver to understand that we wanted to go to Zea Marina–they pronounce Zea as ‘Za-us’.

If you are not a superyacht, they will stick you in some way out place. The marina water is filthy and their arrangements for prepaying on fuel and water are medieval.

On the other hand, there are good service providers in the area. The nearby Flisvos Marina is more expensive but worth the extra money.

We stayed several times in Zea Marina and I can confirm Gordon’s comments: nice and helpful office girls, safe place (even not looking well protected remember that the port police is just opposite of the transit docks).

Contact tip: Michael, Greek skipper in port, very, very helpful, English speaking with a lot of connections: +30697 43 89 159. Always looking for work. Tell him my regards from Thomas.
