CASTRO – car rental. We really wanted to rent a car so as to see more of Chiloe. We found a great one-man 7-car company http://www.gorent.cl/ – while the website was not so helpful – using ‘WhatsApp’

(Whatsapp +56 9 97341409) to contact the company via text quickly provided us with a car for the day we wanted. Jimmy the owner speaks reasonable English and the cars were all in great condition and relatively new (reverse cameras, etc). – SV Begonia

Castro – the RCC PF Chile book clearly describes the areas of Puerto Montt and Chiloe as subject to petty thefts. We took the precaution to secure any lose items inside the boat, whenever we left the boat unattended during the day.

However in Feb 2018 when we were anchored in CASTRO (close to the Armada buildings) we were boarded at night by two men (presumably with the intent to steal). This happened at 3:50 am, and we were aboard – woken by the noises of a boat banging against the hull and footsteps on deck.

We turned on our outside lights and knocked and shouted and the men left (slowly, in a rowboat). There was no aggression from the men, and we assume they believed the boat was unattended. The Armada was amazing (despite our poor Spanish), but because of this incident, we would definitely NOT recommend anyone leave their boat unattended overnight in CASTRO.

We were surprised when we first arrived to find ourselves the only sailboat visiting, not so surprised after this incident. Aside from this incident we really enjoyed Castro, and the Armada assured us it was not normal/common for this to happen. – SV Begonia

Re: Quinched Marina – Begonia stopped there in Feb 2018 – a lovely welcome and a nice little marina. Nearby there are 3 separate cafes for breakfast/lunch, the beach/view is very picturesque but there really isn’t much else to do.

Laundry was $10,000 for a wash and dry (using the machines) and there is no longer any car to borrow (but they can order you a cab)
