 Cambodia - Profile

Facts

  • Cambodia is bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam and has a coastline on the Gulf of Thailand. The capital, Phnom Penh, is located at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers.
  • The start of the 21st century has seen much more political stability for the country after decades of unrest and bloodshed, marked by a slow increase in tourism. Tourism is largely land-based, with only a few yachts sailing there from neighbouring Thailand.

Security

Check the FCO website for the latest advice.

Hotspots for petty crime include the riverfront and BKK areas of Phnom Penh, and the beaches and tourist areas of Sihanoukville. The British Embassy receives a larger number of crime reports from British nationals in Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh.

Cambodia remains heavily affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance. Mined areas are often unmarked. Don’t stray off main routes in rural areas, including around temple complexes.

Last updated January 2017.

Weather

December – April are the dryer months though in April temperatures can reach 40ºC (104ºF). SW monsoon is from May to October bringing rain and high humidity. Seasonal flooding often occurs end July - November.

Latest news. I had just negotiated a US $150 check-in fee with Kamsab, which amounts to approx. $350 after committee payments etc. Then at the last minute as we were about to sail I was notified of a new fee from Customs $500 to enable you to clear. This is on top of everything else. Told them it was outrageous and we would bypass Cambodia. I shame as we have sailed in twice before and enjoyed it.

just (19.01.2018) got following information from an Cambodian agent ([email protected]):
"Thank noted we are the sole Agent in Cambodia you just hand over all related documents to my staff they will do for you.
The cost 350 US for one voyage.
In case you are not left the yacht for sightseeing no need to request Cambodian Visa .
But if you want to make an excursion you should make Cambodian Visa ( cost 50 US per person).
Duration for making 2 hrs
Next few day if you want come back again do the same pay the same."

In other words, a no-go for most of sailors.

Hi Kim, yes, sadly clearance costs can now be between $300 and $500 USD, depending on the size of your boat and your negotiating skills! Visas cost $30 and we are waiting on information re. extensions and costs. Our formalities section for Cambodia has now been updated to reflect these changes.

I have been told that someone ruined it for us all and check in is now $500USD. Can anyone confirm this? I also see it is $30 entry check in fee stated here with extensions up to one year. Any info on the extension costs and can the request for extension be done on arrival to allow a six month stay?
